Remember Facebook Notes?  Back when there was a strict character limit on Facebook status updates, Facebook Notes was popular for a hot minute so that users and brands could write longer and more detailed posts. A few years back, when the status update limit was increased to over 60,000 characters, Facebook Notes faded into the background.

A little known fact, however, is that Notes can be a useful part of your overall social strategy and Facebook presence. Facebook actually revamped the Notes app this past Fall to make it more visually attractive and useful as a blogging tool. Our social media agency is here to help you navigate blogging in the new and improved Facebook Notes.

What It Is

Facebook Notes are similar to blog posts, allowing for longer and more detailed entries than status updates allow. You can upload a header, images, tag friends, add bulleted lists, and highlight quotes. After you’ve written your Note, you can share it on your page so a link to it appears in your status updates, and the note will live on the left sidebar of your page so it can be easily accessed.

How to Install and Access

Note: This is subject to change, as Facebook continually updates its platform.

To install Facebook Notes on a fan page:

On your company’s fan page, click on “Settings” on the navigation bar, on the right hand side.  On the Settings page, click on “Apps” in the left sidebar.  From the Apps options, click “Notes” to install the app onto your fan page.

To access:

To access the Notes section after it has been installed, go to your page, look for the navigation bar, and click on More. Choose Notes from the dropdown menu.

Why It Works

Notes are more visually appealing than a regular status update, and after you’ve typed one, you can publish it and share it on your page. However, notes appear differently in the News Feed and are more eye-catching than a typical status update.

Also, Facebook notes are indexed in Google like blog posts are, meaning they are searchable and can help improve your SEO.  Be sure to write with relevant keywords, add links to your blog or website in your Notes to drive traffic, and also tag relevant friends in your posts so others can be notified and share your Note as well.

For companies, Facebook Notes are also a great way to make announcements and keep fans in the loop about what’s going on internally with your company.  Notes live in the left sidebar on your page, so they’re easy for users to access quickly, rather than users having to hunt for information through hundreds of status updates.
